Snail Mail

Do you correspond with anyone you know strictly through the mail? Not e-mail, the good ol' post office? Today there are so many ways with which we can correspond.
Email
Blogs
Facebook
Myspace
Skype
Twitter
and the list goes on and on.

I wondered, does anyone use only the mail anymore? So I decided I would give it a try. It is not easy! My good friend Sarah-Kala and I were once daily e-mailer's. We would speak on the phone at least 3-4 times a week. I know how much she likes to receive "regular" mail, so I began sending her little notes in the mail. Then letters. After writing a letter, I thought "I can't just pick up the phone and call because I'll just say all the things I just wrote in the letter and then what's the point?"
So I waited. Stop! Wait a minute Mr. Postman! Is there a letter in your bag for me? I sat down with my coffee and the dark pink envelope. The handwritten letter was on pink paper, very nice. I recognized right away the distinct penmanship of my friend. It is part of her personality and I could "hear" her voice as she relayed the recent events in her life. I immediately got out a note card to respond.

It takes about a week or two for a letter to move from the east coast to Hawaii.

I suppose the question is, in this new, fast paced, get-an-answer-right-away world, is keeping in touch through "snail" mail actually keeping "out of touch"? Is the world moving too fast for poor Mr. Postman to keep up?

I often drop notes in the mail to friends. There is something special, in my opinion, about the "written" word that arrives by snail mail. I love getting a letter or card and I love sending them. Yes, I think the world is fast-paced, but I think it is good to sometimes slow down and write a note. It warms the heart!

I would love to correspond with someone through snail mail, it would be exciting getting a letter in the mail I think.

I've often thought of finding a pen pal, but nowadays that could be too risky.

I'm a big letter writer and enjoy it so...and appreciate it so ( "it's a good mail day!" when you get a letter from someone!). You can TOUCH and re-look at it, feel, smell, carry it...it's a little bit of history, a little bit of them..just so neat. We have fun, too...we do silly stuff and mail art on the outer envelopes...mail in soda bottles, etc. It's a blast! I hope to pass my love on. I love inks and papers, etc. Just so fun-fun! :-)

If you want to communicate with someone who needs a letter - send a notecard to a prisoner in jail. think of all the women in prison. You don;t have to be a penpal - just drop a one way note to a woman in jail. Ask her how her day has been, tell you think about her situation and hope for better for her and her family.
A simple one line - " I am thinking about you" might be the one thing that turns someone from depression or worse.

Your local prison has a website and you can get addresess for inmates, send the note with no return address.

Give it a try.
