Rocks For Brains

Just finished reading A Story of A Soul, the autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux. I cannot put into words that make sense, how this book effected me. I know I must read it again, and soon, to really grasp the greatness of this Little Way.

JOT will be happy to learn that only 3 months later (she lent it to me in October) I have finally started Salvation Is From The Jews. I am only a few pages in and I am enjoying it very much. It is opening up the Gospels and is just what I was looking for to jumpstart my New Year. I have read the Gospel's before, but there is just too much there to take in all at once. These books help to open them for me.

Thanks to my hubby, I have also added the Imitation of Christ to my nightly prayers. This is much more of a mediation than a book. It is slow going as I am asking the Lord to help them sink in. Sometimes I feel like a diamond. Not in the beautiful way we know diamonds, but in the fact that it is the hardest rock on the earth. I hope this year to be more absorbent. For the Gospels, the prayers, the peace of Christ to sink in and remain. Like a sponge, except no squeezing here. I want to retain, retain, retain. When I am in the midst of spiritual reading I feel like my little pea brain can't hold it all. That is very frustrating. I make little silent prayers like, you know, help me to use that other 90% to retain! ;)

Any suggestions are always welcome! Happy and Blessed New Year to you all!

Story of a Soul is the number 1 book I have ever read...it took me ages because so often I would read a sentence and it would stop me in my tracks for days just meditating on the depth of her devotion to Christ. I am about to re-read it again in 2009 - this is an every year book, a nourishment to my soul and spirit.

Salvation is from the Jews is an excellent book! I can't believe how much I learned in reading it!

I need to read Story of a Soul. Sounds like I have my New Year's resolution.

Have a blessed and Holy New Year!

I'm glad you like Salvation is from the Jews so far. It is a great book. Story of a Soul - I think I'll buy myself a new copy as my sis has mine and it is hers now . . . I wouldn't have it any other way.

LOVE YOU - !!

Here's the thing - you should want to be okay with being squeezed if and when God wants to squeeze you. I have learned that the hard way (remember conference - my experience could have been so much more had I just let go). This is where trust in the Lord comes in. You have the right pace and attitude in mind for taking it slowly; but being willing to move with and in the Spirit is letting go. Hugs,Sarah

I have read that book, A Story of A Soul. And I to just loved it. I keep all of my Catholic books. Because they, unlike novels, I will keep to read them again or to use them as references.
I have also read books in the gospel like a book and read it within a few days. Yes there is much to absorb but, I just delve right into it. And when I read something that touches my heart, I reread it very slowly. But I to forget things. When I first became Catholic, I felt sooo overwhelmed. Spritual reading is so good for the soul though. Sorry this comment is so long. Happy New Year!
