Have You Talked to Your Boys...

about the Priesthood? The other day my middle son says to me, "I am having trouble with my life choice, should I be a carpenter or a magician?" First of all, I was completely shocked that he mentioned carpenter. I had no idea. It really made me look at him a bit closer. So, of course, now I'm blasting St. Joseph with prayers ;).

We talk about vocations to the Priesthood and religious life often. I try to make sure the kids view it as a real option. As a successful, albeit sacrificial, option in today's world. It really helps when you are blessed with Holy Priests in your parish. My mom passed this poster on to me from Fr. Z's blog.

Print it out and post it on the fridge at home. Use it as a conversation starter at dinner. Just as I was shocked to find out about the whole carpenter thing, you may find out something you didn't know about your children when you discuss vocations.

As parents, we have the obligation to present a calling to the Priesthood and/or religious life to our children. It's up to God after that.

We talk about that option all the time...with 3 boys, you'd think at least one would want to be a priest...

I probably talk about it too much. I think my boys believe I will only be happy if they are priests. I'm now trying to convince them it's not about me. My daughter, on the other hand, we're pushing for the convent at age 16!

Well, you know my story: the youngest feels called, the other two are open to it. I can't ask for more than that, but I keep praying. I don't need to have grandkids - I'm glad I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket for that idea. I just want them all to grow up, love and honor God, and to do well whatever God blesses them to do.

Just to clarify (for other commenters who read comments); my girl is open to the life of a religious. There. Said correctly then. :-)

Good post!
I don't have a boy yet, but hopefully if I do, he will be open to God's will.

Same as Therese here, 3 boys and God should have plans for at least one, right?

His will be done.

We do try to socialize a lot with many Priests and religious.

And my husband jokes that my daughter ned only decide which habit...

We let them all know that it is God's decision and He will call. Keep their hearts open and we also discuss what other vocations we can see them in...

God IS still calling but you are right to notive that not all parents are welcoming or supportive. I've heard from myown Catholic relatives, "God Fordbid!"

Who is going to bring us the Eucharist? It's a devils plan to interfere with vocations.

we talk with all our childen constantly about praying and asking God what way he wants them to serve him. I have talked often with our younger boys about the blessings of the Priesthood and that it is a special calling. Not so much with the older two.

Steve and I pray constantly for all our children to choose the vocation God has planned for them.

Dawn, you'd like this article I found on another of my favorite blogs. Serving at the altar is another way of encouraging vocations to the priesthood.

Love the poster! We've talked about it, but mostly in the form of my oldest son (age 9) saying, unprompted, "Mom I do not want to be a priest." I laughed and said, if God wants you to, and calls you to, then you will feel it in your heart that you want to. You just have to be willing to listen. And he said, "well, I'll listen, but I hope He says that I should be a football player." LOL!
